French visit renewed H E Claude Blanchemaison, republican France's ambassador to India, became the first French official envoy to visit Pune after imperial Louis XVI's Resident was sent to the Peshwa's court, more than 200 years ago. The diplomat, who declined to make any ``historic'' statement in Pune, said the French indifference towards investment in India was mainly due to the language barrier between the two. However, Blanchemaison quickly pointed out that the French seem to be getting over the language problem. The ambassador emphasised the need to strengthen political and economic ties between the two countries, who have so much in common. Including a strong desire to preserve their distinct culture even as they merge into the global scene. The diplomat that he is, Blanchemaison pointed to France's singlehanded efforts at preserving ``creative'' European cinema, in face of the ``dominant economies'' wanting to ``wipe it out''. The need for improved ties between the two countries is even more essential in view of the unipolar world with Blanchemaison stressing the need for every country to have its own identity while cooperating regionally. As for investment in India, he pointed to agri-processing as ``promising'' and in which moreover, the French have considerable expertise. There are of course, the ``traditional'' areas of scientific, pharmaceutical, etc. Blanchemaison was categorical that India would have to emerge as an economic power. ``India cannot afford to let its neighbour beyond the Himalayas grow into an economic power and not become one, too,'' was his observation.
