Mumbai to play host to national garment fair

MUMBAI, July 13: The Clothing Manufacturers' Association of India (CMAI), the national body of garment manufacturers, is organising the 34th national fair from July 29 to August 1 1997, at Exhibition Centre, NSE Complex, Goregaon in Mumbai.

The garment fair will have 300 participants. According to the fair sub- committee chairman CMAI Hiten Shah, around 6,000 dealers from all over the world are expected to visit this event.Foreign dealers from Middle East, the UK, Europe, Africa and other countries are expected to come in large numbers. The fair would have four separate section with children section, ladies/gents section and a special section for denim.

The Clothing Manufacturers' Association has over the years played a pivotal role in putting Indian clothing industry on the international map as a result of which India today exports worth more than Rs 10,000 crore of readymade garments.

The industry is modernising rapidly with an eye on improving quality standards and increasing production. CMAI is planning to organise international fairs for boosting exports in the last quarter of 1997.

CMAI is in the process of setting up a Gujarat garment zone near Vapi with 65,000 sq metres of space fully equipped with latest R&D communication equipment.

This industry is highly labour-oriented and non-polluting with immense scope for growth in future. It is estimated that the growth of the garment industry would be in the region of 20 per cent to 25 per cent in the current year.
