Centre to disclose Indian Bank loan beneficiaries


TIRUCHIRAPALLI, July 13: Finance ministry will publish the list of those who have availed questionable loans from the state-owned Indian Bank, to bring about transparency in the alleged bank scam, finance minister Chidambaram, said on Sunday.

Talking to newsmen here, Chidambaram said those including the right-wing Bharatiya Janata Party leaders who had made allegations against him in the would come to know the truth. He said the number of income tax assessees might increase this year due to various concessions announced by his ministry. Citing an example, said that in the Hyderabad zone, there were 17,500 assessees for the year ended June 1997, as against 5,200 in the previous year.

Asked about the response to the newly introduced voluntary disclosure scheme, he said it would be known only after December 30. He pointed out that he had asked the authorities concerned to pay special attention to the newly enrolled individual income tax assessees and the corporate sector.

Asked about alternative measures to avoid petroleum price hike he said it would be discussed in the steering committee meeting of the United Front.
