Reforms need to reach people

[Details] We have the final confirmation of the industrial slow-down in the last fiscal year. According to government statistics released recently, the industrial production growth rate in 1996-97 was a rather modest 6.7%, down from 11.6% achieved in 1995-96. What must be more worrisome is the prospect of a continued stagnation in industrial growth rates.

[Details] The smoke that lit the fire in the American belly is dying out. In the name av'the lor, as they would have said in the rollicking westerns, the Marlboro Man has been asked to ride west. And Joe Camel, the cartoon figure who plugged cigarettes for R J Reynolds for decades, has been stubbed out. RJR, in abject submission, has agreed to a written enforceable order preventing resumption of the Joe Camel campaign.
