Corporate Briefing -- Hughes Escorts to offer V-Sat network to HPL

July 15: Hughes Escorts Communications is providing a satellite communications network to Haldia Petrochemicals. HECL sources said the company would provide the V-Sat equipment, install and maintain the network, and undertake comprehensive network operations and management for HPL - a venture promoted by the West Bengal government, US-based Soros-Chatterjee group and the Tata group.

Bradman in your drawing room: Mark Tregoning plans to raise Rs 2.03 crore from 39 certified copies of Donald Bradman's original painting by Colin Joseph Bradley, each priced at Rs 5.2 lakh. His expects to collect Rs 5.15 crore from 99 limited edition copies. The proceeds of the project are to be equally shared between Wheelchair Sports, an organisation for disabled athletes and Bradman Museum Trust.

Firms make hay on Net privatisation delay: The delay in the privatisation of Net services has led to the mushrooming of small establishments offering related services and running profitably. They are able to charge sufficiently high rates for their services. Services provided range from allowing clients to surf on the Net to downloading specific information.

Pure Drinks director stripped of powers: A board meeting has ``stripped'' Pure Drinks (New Delhi) director Satwant Singh of all powers, company sources said. Singh said he had no knowledge of the board meeting. The sources said that though Satwant has been divested of his powers, he would continue as a board director.

Electronics Corporation seminar: Research activities of Electronics Corporation of India would come up for review at a two-day R&D seminar being organised here from July 18. Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission R Chidambaram would inaugurate the seminar to be held in Hyderabad at the ECIL mainframe unit, head of ECIL corporate research wing said.

CAG finds 44 loss-making firms in Bengal: Of the 61 West Bengal companies, including 12 subsidiaries, 44 incurred losses of Rs 121.67 crore, 13 earned profit of Rs 32.33 crore, three were in pre-operative stages and one company had not finalised its first accounts, according to a CAG report.

Nift to open branch in Bangalore: National Institute of Fashion Technology is all set to open its seventh branch in Bangalore to meet the growing demand of the garment industry for providing quality fashion designers and apparel marketing professionals.t will start a three-year fashion designing diploma and a two-year apparel marketing course.

Monopolies panel to probe into STC trade practices: Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Commission will investigate into the allegations of ``unfair'' trade practices resorted to by State Trading Corporation. On an Amritsar-based rice exporter's complaint, who alleged that STC adopted ``unfair method or deceptive trade practices'', the commission ruled: ``We are prima facie satisfied with the contention of the applicant.''

Railways in talks with Sanghi, Kirloskar Pneumatic: Railways are holding negotiations with Sanghi group of industries to sign a memorandum of understanding for introduction of a multi-modal transportation concept called `piggy back system'. Railways have also signed an agreement with Kirloskar Pneumatic to run a service through roadrailers by utilising the railways' track and locomotives.

Tamil Nadu urged to release Sterlite probe team names: People's Watch, a voluntary organisation, has urged Tamil Nadu government to release to the public names and identity of team members of the high-level committee constituted to enquire into Sterlite unit gas leak incident in Tuticorin.

Philips launches new projectors: Philips India launched its range of proscreen 4x00 series LCD projectors with facility for connectivity to a PC, VCR, or any other video-source to tap the fast growing PC market. The products were uniquely designed to detect resolution output being produced by the PC and to convert the signal to give a full screen, edge-to-edge display with no loss of information or picture quality.

NDDB, centre in pact: National Dairy Development Board and government have joined hands to initiate training programmes in different disciplines of animal husbandry, agriculture minister Chaturanan Mishra and NDDB chairman V Kurien said.

Babcock & Wilcox eyes power sector: American power company Babcock and Wilcox is eyeing domestic power sector but has ruled out becoming an IPP. ``We will participate as manufacturers and on global tenders floated by the Indian government,'' the company president said.
