Railways to launch multi modal system

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, July 15: Railways are holding negotiations with Sanghi group of industries to sign a memorandum of understanding for introduction of a multi-modal transportation concept called `piggy back system'.

Under this system, trucks can be mounted on a special type of wagon with an engine that haul between 100 to 150 fully loaded trucks. The wagons will be so designed that loading and unloading will be done by driving the trucks on to and out of the wagon.

According to an official release, the industrial group has offered to provide its own wagons, engines and terminals.

It will also undertake making, collection, loading, unloading and distribution.

Railways have also signed an agreement with Kirloskar Pneumatic company limited to run a specialised service through road railers by utilising the railways' track and locomotives.
