Gulf region a good diamond export target

Indian diamond exporters would do well to take note of the rising demand for diamonds in the Gulf countries. Estimated diamond jewellry demand in these countries is placed at around $1 billion per annum, about 0.5% of the global demand (estimated at $52 billion at the retail level).

An obvious inconsistency

There is an obvious inconsistency in the policy statement by Union textiles minister RL Jalappa on revival of sick units of the NTC. In the Monday's meeting of the ministry's consultative panel, he declared that the government would fully safeguard the workers' interests.

Time is running out for QRs

India has little room left for negotiation on quantitative restrictions, it should use this wisely. After the deadlock on the WTO talks in Geneva, it was only a question of time. And on July 15 the US - along with Australia and New Zealand - initiated dispute settlement consultations with India under the WTO.
