[Details] The eighties brought in the era of Reaganism and Thatcherism. US and UK have been dismantling the social welfare state; gutting education, national medical service, welfare, and programs that helped the poor and "left outs." The underlying rationale was, and is, that governments are irrational, inefficient and ineffective.

Sugar decontrol must

[Details] Sugar industry, like others of its kind that are controlled by the government, is in doldrums, thanks to sustained control for political rather than financial gains. By controlling the sector for years the outcome is for everyone to see.

Needed: a new govt-industry nexus

[Details] It is not easy to praise India's politicians or bureaucracy. Not after witnessing the antics of the Laloos of the world. Not in the face of Indian political morality sinking to new lows every passing year. Not when corruption, crony capitalism, inspector raj, and arbitrary policymaking have left the economy up the creek without a paddle.
