Even after so many years of sustained growth, Americans stop to think whether they're better off than they used to be. Economists say that American incomes, as measured in inflation-adjusted dollars, have risen more slowly in the past two decades than in earlier times.

Imagine for a moment that when you walk into an ice cream parlour, you find not 28 choices, but 100, 200, or even 300 times that many. More than 8,000 different kinds of ice cream! And instead of flavours you're familiar with, like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, you find descriptions that don't give you a clue as to what the ice cream tastes like.
