It is ironic that, on the fiftieth anniversary of India's political independence, the country seems all set to lose its economic independence. After realising that it cannot do without foreign direct investment, it is now only a question of a few years before we lose our economic independence.

Fight the bullies on QRs
The US and the European Union, with Australia and New Zealand in tow, are pressuring India to phase out quantitative restrictions (QRs) on imports. The offer to do so in seven years is apparently unacceptable to them, and judging by commerce minster, B B Ramaiah's utterances, he is willing enough to let US trade representative Jefrrey Lang call the shots.
