Corporate Briefing -- Casil Health embarks on expansion plan


Casil Health Products Ltd (CHPL), a Cadila Pharma Group company, scaled up the Bench technology developed by Dehradun-based Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), to become the third largest producer of `tetramethylene sulphone', also called Sulpholane in short. The other two companies are Shell of the UK and Phillips Petroleum of the USA. According to a Cadila Pharma spokesperson, the company has embarked on a massive expansion plan to meet international demand for the product.

Milk Specialities MD's bail plea rejected: The bail plea of Milk Specialities Ltd managing director Jagjit Singh, has been dismissed as "infructous" by the judicial magistrate, first class, Jagmohan Singh, in a fraud case filed against him on the complaint by his mother Davinder Kaur. However, another application filed by his mother that came up for hearing on September 29 for early arrest of her industrialist son has been dismissed by the court. Jagjit Singh's mother had registered a case under sections 420, 467, 468, 471 and 120 of Indian penal code for siphoning off a huge sum of money from her account to his own.

L&T's new facility: Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has set up a new facility to fabricate electrical transmission line towers at Pithampur near Indore in Madhya Pradesh. This will consolidate the company's diversification into electrical transmission line towers, said a company release. The installed capacity of the units is 18,000 tonnes per annum and will cater to the market in the northern and eastern parts. The company already has a unit for fabrication of transmission towers at Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu which has a capacity of 15,000 tpa.

Cummins India to develop engines: Cummins India Ltd., the domestic arm of the US engine manufacturer, is in the process of developing 45 litre and 60 litre (1.5 mw) engines. This is the first time that primary engine development is taking place outside Cummins' plant at Columbus, Indiana, TM Solso, president and chief operating officer, Cummins Engine Co Inc told reporters here. Solso said the company would manufacture higher horsepower engines, up to the 4.5 hp range although the 60 litre engine, used in parallel, can go up to 5 mw.

Enron mulls option to enter modernisation sector: US multinational Enron Power Corporation is exploring possibilities of creating a 100 per cent subsidiary or entering a joint venture with a domestic partner in the potential business area of renovation and modernisation of ageing power plants in the country. To augment technological capability in this area, Enron has recently taken over a four billion dollar US Company - Portland General Electric Power Company - which has vast expertise in the modernisation of old power plants.

Northwest Airlines, Jet Air sign agreement: Northwest Airlines and Jet Airways announced on Monday that they have signed a cooperative marketing agreement to provide enhanced benefits for passengers travelling on Northwest and KLM flights to the country. The agreement with Jet Airways is well timed to strengthen Northwest's new service to the country. Northwest began services to Delhi and Mumbai on October 1. The partnership will include coordination of flight schedules at Delhi and Mumbai to provide convenient connections to the 18 other Indian cities that Jet Airways serves beyond Delhi and Mumbai.

Bry-Air to intensify focus on Asian region: Bry-Air, a leading name in dehumidification worldwide, is intensifying its focus on the Asian region. The company had set up a joint venture in the country - Bry-Air India - 15 years ago. The maturing of the India operations in terms of marketing, research and development and new product development has led to recasting its fully autonomous operation. The name Bry-Air India is therefore being changed to Bry-Air Asia. Between the Asia operation, headquartered in Delhi and its subsidiary facility in Malaysia, the focus of their autonomous operation will be all of Asia.

Assam expresses concern over Tata Tea-Ulfa nexus: The Assam government on Monday expressed `serious concern' over the alleged harbouring of prime accused Brajen Gogoi by the top brass of the Tatas in the Tata Tea - Ulfa nexus case. A top official source confirmed that the state government, since the last evening had examined the various aspects of the case in the wake of a section of the press publishing the transcripts of conversations, between several top industrialists and a member of parliament on the Tata Tea - Ulfa nexus.
