ULFA planned to kill Rajiv, says Jain panel

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

NEW DELHI, Nov 22: The Jain Commission of inquiry has charged ULFA with having prepared a plan to assassinate late prime minister Rajiv Gandhi and suggested a nexus between LTTE and ULFA, which was sought to be played down by the Tamil Nadu government. In its interim report, the commission quoted intelligence reports to indicate that ULFA had constituted thirty suicide squads to hit specific targets including Rajiv Gandhi.

Rajiv Gandhi's name was high on the hit list of ULFA as they hold him responsible for imposition of president's rule in Assam and the ban on ULFA. Regarding specific nexus between LTTE and ULFA, the interim report said their combined endeavour in TN had been confirmed independently by three different agencies, the IB, RAW and Army Intelligence.
