Bharat Petroleum dons badge of safety

Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) successfully completed one million accident free mandays on November 21, 1997. "A well laid out safety procedure for plant operations, risk analysis studies at the design stage and a well documented work permit system, coupled with high standards of safety awareness among the employees made this feat possible," said BPCL chief fire and safety manager Chandrasekhar Chakrabarti. The refinery is also adhering to strict environmental norms and its liquid and gas emission levels are well below industry standards, he added.

SRF Overseas gets ISO-9002: The Dubai-based SRF Overseas Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SRF Ltd, recently received ISO 9002 certification from KPMG Peat Marwick LLP, US, for the manufacture and marketing of nylon/polyester tyre cord fabrics. The $27 million project is already in an advanced stage of approval with leading tyre majors.

Savita Chem HI net a shade up: Savita Chemicals Ltd recorded a net profit of Rs 4.55 crore in the first six months of the current financial as against Rs 4.31 crore in the corresponding period last year. The company's turnover stood at Rs 70.17 crore as compared with Rs 68.18 crore. Gross profit improved from Rs 7.45 crore to Rs 7.98 crore.

TQMI in pact with Komatsu: TQMI and Komatsu Career Creation Ltd (KCC), a 100 per cent subsidiary of Komatsu Ltd of Japan, signed a memorandum of understanding for co-operation in the field of total productive maintenance (TPM) and total quality management (TQM). TPM is aimed at restoring the equipment to its proper condition and educating personnel about the same to have a positive impact on productivity, quality, cost, delivery, safety and environment.

BHEL secures Rs 45 cr Gail order: Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) bagged a Rs 45 crore order for the supply of compressor and drive turbine package for Gas Authority of India Limited's (Gail) LPG recovery plant at Auraiya in Uttar Pradesh. "The order is a testimony to the customers' confidence in the company," stated a BHEL release. The equipment has to be supplied in 15 months. BHEL had earlier supplied two gas turbine and one steam turbine driven compressors for Gail's recovery project at Auraiya. The company recently secured two major orders for compressors from the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) for its refinery expansion project at Vishakapatnam.

Givo Ltd bags export order: Givo Ltd, a newly rechristened tripartite venture for menswear, bagged major export orders from several American and European companies. Givo will export almost 90 per cent of its production while the rest is targeted for the domestic market. Givo Ltd is a licensee for marketing Studio 000.1 by Gianfranco Ferre and Principe by Marzotto Spa of Italy in the country.

Ahmedabad firm launches new cream: The Ahmedabad-based Zydus-Cadila, under its Everyuth range, launched Collagen and Elastin anti-wrinkle cream. It is free from alpha-hydroxy acids and can be safely applied around eyes and mouth. It is priced at Rs 103.50.

Delhi traders to protest: More than 100 trade associations in Delhi have decided to go on a week long protest against the government's imposition of service tax on the trading community. Coming together under the umbrella of the Forum of Delhi Traders Association the trade associations will also take part in the All India Trade bandh on December 2-4, called by the Bharat Udyog Vyapar Mandal and Confederation of All India Trader.

Sales tax raids: The sales tax department of Delhi government carried out major raids last night on generator sets manufacturers and traders in the capital and found massive evidence to indicate evasion of sales tax by fictitious billing and maintenance of duplicate sets of accounts, as well as operating non-existing firms. As soon as the news of the raids spread in old Delhi areas, shutters were downed and mobs gathered. The department had to seal five premises where the dealers were not cooperating. The raids preceded reports that almost all the major operators had started showing decline in sales in Delhi. The dealers were all showing sales from tax free zones located at places like Silvasa (Dadra and Nagar Haveli), Daman and Pondicherry.

BIFR to wind up two companies: The Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction (BIFR) proposed winding up of two ailing private sector companies saying they cannot be revived on a long-term basis. According to recent BIFR notices, Sri Katragadda Electronics Ltd (SKEL) and Asmarox Private Limited (APL) cannot be revived and it is "just, equitable and in public interest" to wind up the two sick companies. The board said there was no concrete rehabilitation scheme, with means of finance fully tied up for reviving the units despite sufficient opportunities allowed to all concerned. No other party was available to takeover the companies and all possibilities of rehabilitating them were explored and exhausted, the notice said.
