Merging to compete
Last Wednesday, five Chinese petrochemical companies, owned by the state, were merged to create a giant petrochemical corporation, the China Eastern United Petrochemical Co. Ltd. On Thursday North China Pharmaceutical Group Co, a major drug maker, took over rival Taiyuan Pharmaceutical.

At last count (February 1997 was the latest I could get stats for), the numbers of India's registered educated unemployed stood at 376 lakh. But the possible addition of current United Front ministers to that number need not cause anyone to panic. Looking at the numbers, the Unemployment Problem (in solemn capitals) appears to be not insurmountable.

Reining in short-term external debt
Compared with the share of short-term debt in other developing countries, India has a considerably low dependence on external financing of short-term maturity. The short-term as a percentage of total debt was 9.9% in 1990 for India as compared with developing countries' average of 17.6% and by 1995 the figure came down to 4.3% for India.
