MTNL plans WiLL trials

TM Arun Kumar

MUMBAI, Dec 16: Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) will conduct a field trial of its wireless in local loop (WiLL) services based on the indeginously-developed Cordect technology. According to company sources, the field trial, which will be undertaken in Mumbai and Delhi, is expected to begin by the end of January, 1998.

The state-owned MTNL has already floated tenders inviting bids for buying two 1,000 line Cordect-based systems. It is also understood that the bids received by the company are being evaluated and a final decision will be taken soon, according to sources.

The decision to conduct field trials of the Cordect technology based system is seen by telecom analysts as a boost to the domestically developed technology. Cordect, a variation of the European technology Digital Enhanced Cordless Telephony (DECT), has been developed by IIT, Chennai.
