[Details] Former governor of Maharashtra, C Subramaniam criticised the Election Commission for not allowing the announcement of policy on exports. He called upon the president KR Narayanan to intervene and allow policy decisions to be taken-that have no electoral motive.

CBEC to launch fast-track clearance scheme for imports

[Details] The Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC) is launching a new fast-track clearance procedure from Jan 1, 1998 for clearance of import consignments. Under the new scheme importers will be authorised to assess their own goods, file bills of entry, make payment of duty on their own assessment and take clearance of goods.

Mumbai overtakes Delhi in cellular phone subscriptions

[Details] For the first time, the number of cellular subscribers in Mumbai has overtaken the leader, New Delhi. According to figures submitted by the metro cellular operators to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) at the end of November 1997, Mumbai with 2,12,825 subscribers topped the list followed closely by Delhi with 2,09,161 subscribers.
