Corporate Briefing -- Tata Consultancy targets Rs 800-cr from exports


Tata Consultancy Services Limited has targeted Rs 800 crore from software exports for the financial year 1997-98. In the financial year 1996-97, the company notched up a turnover of Rs 721 crore out of which Rs 580 crore was generated from software exports. Tata Consultancy Services senior vice-president LC Singh said on Tuesday that the company was experiencing a compounded annual growth rate of 40 per cent, the highest in the information technology industry in the country.

Jetking to represent ICS:

ICS Learning Systems has chosen Jetking as their representatives for the Indian subcontinent. Jetking will support ICS in marketing as well as awareness efforts. It will also be the admission point for those students who wish to take up courses with ICS. Jetking will provide all facilities to students including counselling and co-ordination support. ICS is a major player in the field of distance learning since 1980.

Hi-tech training centre for small-scale units:

A Rs 6.84-crore high technology training centre and tool room for the benefit of small industries would be established here next year, the president of the Tiruchirappalli District Tiny and Small-scale Industries Association (Tiditssia) S Sridharan said on Tuesday. The ministry of human resource development would contribute 90 per cent of the cost, while the balance would be given by the Tamil Nadu government as grant.

SmithKline Beecham to link headquarters with units:

SmithKline Beecham is linking its headquarters with its factories, regional sales offices and packing stations across the country through a V-Sat network. Of the 34 sites to be networked, 16 have been connected and are operational. The V-Sat network provided by Bharti BT will enable SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare Limited and SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals India Ltd to extend their logistics management support in the country to support its customer base. The network will allow on-line access from all locations and across all functions leading to improved coordination and operational efficiency.

Cochin Shipyard bags jack-up rig order:

The Cochin shipyard has seen a spurt in activity in shipbuilding and ship repair and bagged orders worth Rs 6 crore for a jack up rig. Negotiations are on for repair of a ship belonging to the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) worth around Rs 17 crore, an official release said here on Tuesday. For the first time, an American owned jack up rig in operation in the Bombay High has also been firmed up for repair at a cost of Rs 13 crore at the yard.

Tektronix bags award:

Tektronix India has won the best peripheral award for its Phaser 560 colour laser printer at the prestigious Comdex Asia 1997 show in Singapore. Tektronix is one of the leading companies in workgroup colour printing, video systems and networking business. The Phaser 560 printer raises the bar for price/performance value in colour printer segment. It integrates both black and white and colour output in a single workgroup printer at a resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi. Also the laser printers give a top print speed with 5 ppm for colour and 14 ppm for black and white. Colour printing division of Tektronix a variety of printers, including graphic, arts and technical. Hamid appointed Engineering Projects chairman-cum-managing director:

Saleem Hamid has assumed charge as chairman cum managing director (CMD)of Engineering Projects (India) Ltd (EPI), a public sector enterprise, under the administrative control of the ministry of industry. Before taking over as the CMD, Hamid served as director (commercial and marketing) with another government owned enterprise, Indian Tourism and Development Corporation (ITDC), an official release said here on Tuesday.

National institute of renewable energy in Punjab:

The Centre is setting up a National Institute of Renewable Energy in Punjab to focus on research and development in renewable energy systems. The institute, to be named after former foreign minister Swaran Singh, will be fully funded by the centre. The planning commission has already allocated a provision of Rs 7.5 crore for the institute during the current plan. The institute will be located in Jalandhar. Establishment of the national institute was conceptualised by the ministry of non-conventional energy resources during 1995-96.
