UNDP lauds success on poverty front

Press Trust of India

DAKA (SENEGAL), Dec 23: India has set an example for other developing nations by successfully fighting poverty among the teeming millions and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) would endeavour to use these experiments in its future programmes, a top UNDP official has said.

"India has broken the back of poverty within the country despite a huge population...These efforts can be used as an example in other poverty-ridden nations," Djibril Diallo, director, division of public affairs of the UNDP, said.

Observing that good governance in India was one of the prime factors responsible for poverty eradication, he said many developing countries see India as a role model worth emulating in their efforts to banish poverty. "No country can eradicate poverty unless it has good governance...India provides quite an experience and example in this regard," the official told PTI here.
