MUMBAI, January 13: Meltron employees Welfare Association (MEWA), in a writ petition filed in the Mumbai high court, has challenged the recent handover of the 8,000 sq ft premises in Nariman Point by the state government and Meltron board to the landlord.Terming it as "illegal, malafide and anti-workers," MEWA has alleged that a person, bearing considerable influence over the government, has for collateral purposes and gain, pressurised Meltron to surrender the premises. The petititoner further claimed that the decision was arbitrary and violative of Article 14 of the Constitution, as the company's interest has not been taken into account. MEWA has appealed to the court to quash the decision and asked the government and Meltron to take back the possession of the premises. The petitioner has also sought a stay on the handover of the premises. According to MEWA, they were a protected tenant within the meaning of the Rent Act aand thus cannot be asked to vacate the premises. The respondents are the state
government, Meltron, Jadhav Deshmukh Trust, Shankar Vishnu Jadhav, Narayan Deshmukh and Srinath Enterprises. The Nariman Point premises, which was owned by Jadhav Deshmukh Trust, was leased to Meltron in 1978. Jadhav, one of the trustees allegedly close to the Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray, has entered into an "underhand deal" with the government for a private gain, the petitioner added.
