Steyr India to set up unit in Pune

Our Corporate Bureau
NEW DELHI, January 13: Steyr India Pvt Ltd, the wholly owned subsidiary of Austrian auto-engineering major, Steyr Daimler Puch AG, is setting up a state-of-the-art engineering facility at Pune.

The facility, which will be equipped with computer design and calculation systems, will aim at providing auto manufacturers with a whole range of engineering and technical knowhow support. The support would range from developing a single component to preparing a prototype of a complete car.

The company is credited with having designed cars for the stable of Mercedes Benz, Volkswagen, Chrysler, Audi, Fiat, Case, Volvo and others. In fact, even Daewoo's new product, Nubira, which is being talked of for a launch in India as well, has also been entirely produced by Steyr Daimler Puch.

The company is not new to India. It had a joint venture with Hero Majestic for the manufacture of the Hero Puch bike. The Indian subsidiary, however, has no plans to enter into a joint venture here as this would restrict it to working for a single auto company.

"We want to provide support to all the players. The research and development centre will commence operations from mid-February once the company has shortlisted its team of engineers", said Gerrit Van Den Oever, managing director.

"Steyr India will focus on its core strength to provide Indian OEMs with technical solutions for systems, components, several complete vehicles including four-wheel-drive vehicles, LCVs, medium and heavy duty trucks. The services will cover all types of development process including layout/concept, detail design, prototyping, testing and validation", he added.

The reason for setting up the centre at Pune has been attributed to the clutch of auto manufacturers that have set up shop in the city and others like Fiat which are on their way.
