Telco city waits for the right colour

Vivek Law
NEW DELHI, January 13: To ensure that the right colour lights up Telco's dream small car project, the company will resort to a unique multimedia interactive session with the visitors at its stall to ascertain the colours it should adopt for the now most talked about launch in the Indian car market. On Thursday, however, a dark blue coloured "mint" or "Indica" as the car has been ascribed to as, in coded language, will peep out of an iron dome erected in the centre of the huge stall, which is being referred to as the "Telco city" for the seven day fair period.

Officials expect a good 40,000 visitors to the stall every day and have spared no effort in putting their best foot forward for them.

"We will be conducting a small survey through a continuous multimedia interaction with people to get their response to the car and its features.

The colours in which the car will roll out is yet not decided and views on this too will be solicited from the visitors", said an official at the stall.

The dome itself has caught the fancy of some people who have even gone on to believe that this might well be a trick carried out at a circus where a motorcyclist zooms around a similar looking dome!

The most talked about car is however, not going to roll into its home for seven days till the very last moment. "The car will be unveiled on Thursday right here and will be brought into the stall at the last moment", officials said.

And even though the Safari and a heavy duty truck is also going to be launched at the Auto-Expo on Thursday, officials also know that it is the small car which is going to catch more than just the glances.

For the Safari the company will also throw open bookings to the public. The diesel engine sports utility vehicle has reached the dealers and is expected to be priced at Rs 7.25 lakh for the two-wheel diesel and Rs 7.75 lakh for the four wheel variety. 5000 of these vehicles are expected to be supplied to Telco dealers by March. 1998.

Officials have been on the job for the past month shuttling up and down from Mumbai and are "more than excited" with just about two days to go for the event, the largest of its kind in Asia.

The basic infrastructure is in place, the plants and other aesthetic have arrived, so too have some of the vehicles. The Safari would arrive on Wednesday. The wait is now only for Ratan Tata's dream car.
