Cotton yarn exports record 17% growth: Cotton yarn exports continued to surge ahead by recording 17 per cent growth even as overall exports growth failed to pick up to the desired level this financial year. The country which emerged as the world leader in cotton yarn exports in 1996-97 maintained the upward trend, with its exports touching $1.1 billion (Rs 3,958 crore) from April to November this fiscal. Cotton yarn exports crossed $1.5 bn (Rs 5,330 crore) in 1996-97.Smog in Chennai delays flights: Flight operations to and from Chennai were delayed by 40-160 minutes due to poor visibility caused by heavy smog over the Chennai airport this morning. The flights delayed included an Indian Airlines service to New Delhi and the incoming New Delhi-Chennai flight. While the Chennai-New Delhi flight took off only at 0915 hrs instead of 0640 hrs, the flight from Delhi arrived here at 0940 hrs, 40 minutes behind schedule. Greece, India sign pact on tourism: India and Greece have agreed to
consider simplification of tourism visa formalities and explore possibilities for joint ventures in the tourism sector. The agreement was signed on Tuesday by tourism minister Srikanta Kumar Jena and minister for foreign affairs of Greece Theodoros Pangalos. Prime minister IK Gujral and visiting Greece President Constantinos Stephanopoulos were present on the occasion. The agreement also envisages exchange of information know-how, cooperation between organisations involved in tourism promotion.
