Khanna elevated as special secretary

NN Khanna has been appointed special secretary in the Ministry of Commerce. He will be in charge of trade policy issues relating to the World Trade Organisation. Khanna has served in various capacities in the ministry of commerce as deputy secretary. He was first secretary (commercial) in the High Commission of India, London and has also worked in the office of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade as Additional CCI&E and CCI&E. For over five years in Bangkok he was adviser on trade policy in UN-ESCAP.

Chennai traders down shutters

Traders in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday downed their shutters demanding the revocation of professional tax from shops and establishments. Though the response to the bandh call, given by the Tamil Nadu Vyapari Sangangal in Peravai was partial in the city, reports from the districts said about 80 per cent of the shops remained closed. Most of the tax levied against the trading community was not beneficial for augmenting revenue but only helped to institutionalise corruption, traders alleged.

Railways completes computerisation of claims work

The Railways have completed computerisation of claims work in all the zonal railways to ensure expeditious settlement of claims and also reactivated the scheme of mobile claims offices to receive and settle claims on the spot at important cities. Full powers has been delegated to general managers of zonal railways for settling time barred claims cases, an official press release said.
