BBC plans elaborate poll coverage

NEW DELHI, January 22: BBC Worldwide service has drawn up an elaborate plan for covering the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.Tony Hall, chief executive, BBC News, said, "on television and radio and through television, radio and on-line service, we are looking to give a feel of the country, important issues, the many facets of people's lives during the polls as well as the hard news coverage of the voting itself". On "BBC World" the coverage will be led by the Delhi bureau's Mike Woodbridge, Daniel Lak and Satish Jacob. A team of senior journalists will also join them from London. Stephen Cole will be anchoring "The World Today" and "Asia Today", which will be telecast live from Delhi with the results of the polls coming in. Another programme named "Question Time Election Specials" will open debate on key issues and will feature leading politicians. On "BBC World Service" radio George Arney and producer Martin Plaut will cover the entire elections from the February 16 to March 3. The two will be
providing regular live and recorded reporting into "Newshour" and "Newsday" throughout the period. The Hindi service of BBC World radio will carry "Vivechana" and the Urdu service will provide reports and analysis for listeners in north India, especially Bihar, and Gulf countries and Pakistan as well.
