BHEL sanctions Rs 200cr loan for KPCL: Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has sanctioned a bridge loan of Rs 200 crore to the Karnataka Power Corporation Ltd (KPCL) for the Raichur Thermal Power Station (RTPS) VI. The bridge loan will be used for procuring boilers to the plant. KPCL is setting up RTPS V & VI at Raichur in Karnataka for which a sum of Rs 1,236 crore has already been sanctioned by 14 financial institutions. KPCL has already executed agreements with several financial institutions and commercial banks.

Tektronix unveils colour printer: Tektronix India has launched its new Phaser 360 workgroup colour printers in the Indian market. The company has also cut price of its popular Phaser 350 printers by as much as 35 per cent. The Phaser 360, coming at a price of Rs 2,40,000, prints at 800 dots per ince resolution and includes a range of enhanced performance features that the customers generally get at extra cost. The company said it is priced well below other colour laser printers ofsimilar configurations. At Rs 1,70,000, the Phaser 350 colour printers could be the lowest priced workgroup colour printer with a high level print quality. Both these printers use solid inks for the fastest, and most affordable prints. The printers are also economical with each text page costing Rs 1.50. Also these can print six colour pages per minute and 5.5 transparencies, using a 100 mhz RISC processor. The processor also enables `first page out' speeds, which are on par with the leading 24-page-per-minute monochrome laser printers.

HCL Comnet starts consultancy unit: HCL Comnet Systems and Services Ltd, part of the $550-million HCL group of the United States, has started a consultancy wing aimed at prospective internet service providers (ISPs). The division has been set up with an investment of Rs 2 crore and the company claims it is the first such unit in the country. Called the `Internet Proof-of-Concept Centre', it will provide specialised consulting in the areas of networks, media, productperformance and inter-operability. The centre will be capable of testing and demonstrating services such as e-mail, video-conferencing, web-page hosting and other internet related services.

Sterling Leather bags award: Bangalore-based Sterling Leather Ltd has been selected for the prestigious Design Award in the leather garments category. The second prize in the same category would be awarded to city-based Indo-Skin Exports Ltd at a function to coincide with the inauguration of the 13th Indian International Leather Fair in the city on February five. Design Awards were instituted by the Council of Leather Exports in January 1997. It evoked very enthusiastic response from the leather industry as well as from the freelance designers, students of design courses.

Hotmail users can avail Microsoft applications: Nine million users of Hotmail, the world's most popular E-mail service, now have a new message flashing on their screens -- an invitation to link up to a host of Microsoft's applicationsand utilities. These include Microsoft Investor, Expedia.com.travel, Microsoft Carpoint, Internet Gaming Zone, Expedia Maps, MS Sidewalk as well as a whole lot of other Microsoft sites for the `techy'. After its takeover of Hotmail Corporation, Microsoft has lost no time planting its advertisements in Hotmail's service. For the software giant, the `gates' to over 18 per cent of all Internet users in the world have now been opened up. Of the 40 million Internet users, nine million subscribe to Hotmail Corporation's free E-mail service.

ET&T offers computer-training: The public sector ET&T Corporation has started offering computer education and training centre in Kerala. The first centre in the State will be inaugurated in Thiruvananthapuram. ET&T Corporation proposes to start 25 such centres in the State by March 1999, corporation chairman and managing director SN Zindal said here on Tuesday. ET&T would be offering five courses -- post-graduate diploma in computer applications, advanced diploma incomputer applications, certificate course in computer software technology and short-term modular courses. "There is a huge demand and supply gap of qualified computer professionals in the country," he said.

BTP plans to hike equity in local venture: The $654-million BTP Plc of UK has proposed to hike its equity in the joint venture with the RPG group from 50 per cent to 67 per cent. It is also making the joint venture company -- RPG-BTP (India) Limited a manufacturing base for speciality chemicals.
