MUL may take up small-car issue today

Our Corporate Bureau
NEW DELHI, January 30: The small-car war cry that reverberated throughout the Auto Expo '98 is likely to find its echo during a crucial board meeting of Maruti Udyog Ltd on Saturday. With industry minister Murasoli Maran having publicly asked MUL managing director RSSLN Bhaskaruddu to gear up for protecting its market share, the Maruti representatives on the board are likely to take up the issue of introduction of new models with Suzuki Motor Corporation (SMC) more forcefully. Bhaskarudu has listed 27 items for discussion at the board meeting but sources feel that despite a widely perceived keenness to resolve thorny issues, no major decisions would be taken as two Suzuki directors - Y Saito and J Sugimori - are not expected to attend the meeting.

In which case, Suzuki will have two representatives at Saturday's meeting as compared to the government's five.
