Calcutta to host science meet in January 1999

Calcutta, Feb 7: The second Science Centre World Congress will be held in Calcutta between January 11 and 15, 1999, at the Science City.

Former director-general of the National Centre for Science Museums (NCSM) and the chairman of the Programme Committee for the World Congress Saroj Ghosh said at a press conference at the Science City recently, "We are expecting more than 500 participants from more than 50 countries this time with a major participation from the countries which do not have science centres but would like to build them."Among the topics to be discussed at the meet would be the role of science as an agent of social change. The other topics that are likely to be discussed are `Public Connection', `Appropriate Technology', `Regional Networking' etc.

The first congress was held in Helsinki, Finland, in 1996. The one after Calcutta congress is slated for 2002, likely to be held in Australia.The NCSM has drawn up a budget of about Rs 25 lakh for the five-day conference. Around four to five paneldiscussions will be taking place simultaneously on all the days using all the infrastructure of the Science City campus.
