  Eastern, western regions sign power agreement
With the signing of a recent pact between eastern and western regions, 180 MW of excess power will be routed from the eastern region to the western region. However, out of this a major share of 100 MW is being given to Kerala in the southern region which has around 20% shortage of power.
  Govt asks plastic, rubber firms not to avail of modvat facility
The Centre has asked plastic and rubber industries not to avail of modvat facility this fiscal. It is believed that the Centre has been making this request to ensure minimum fund outflow from its coffers so that it can show better books at the financial year-end.

US telecom equipment-makers fall prey to Asian financial slump
Two telecommunications equipment makers became the latest US victims of the Asian financial slowdown on Friday after saying they faced order cancellations from South Korea, their major export market. Qualcomm Inc's stock dropped about 15% after the San Diego-based company stated that its second-quarter earnings would fall below first-quarter levels due to cancelled orders from South Korea.

Russia set to grant foreign car-makers free-trade zones
Foreign carmakers in Russia will be encouraged to use more domestic parts under a decree creating mini free-trade zones. The move is an effort to boost the domestic automotive industry and attract foreign investment.

Plan to extend PAN facility to 33 more cities
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) plans to extend the permanent account number (PAN) facility to 33 cities in the next financial year. The facility, currently available to asseesses in the four metropolitan cities, has been favourably received.
