Criminals -- No longer exceptions in politics but the rule

PATNA, February 8: Sitting Rashtriya Janata Dal MP from Siwan Mohammad Shahbuddin, alias Shabhu sports an AK-47 and Dawood Ibrahim of Siwan, has at least 29 criminal cases registered against him, including the murder of a student leader of Jawaharlal Nehru University, Chandrasekhar. He had five murder cases against him during the 1996 polls. Chandrashekar's mother Kaushalya Devi, who has been campaigning for CPI(ML) candidate Ramesh Singh Kushwaha since Friday, has caused a flutter in the camps of Bharatiya Janata Party's Vijay Shankar Dubey and Shahabuddin.

Devendranath Dubey, the sitting MLA from Govindganj in the Motihari parliamentary constituency who is contesting the polls on a Samajwadi Party ticket, is charged with poisoning of six people and is wanted in 30 criminal cases. He has been absconding and the police was out to arrest him on the day of filing of nomination papers.

Mohammad Taslimuddin, ex-Union home minister during Deve Gowda's regime, has been jailed four times and is facing 16criminal charges of murder and rape. Also known as Robinhood in his constituency Kishanganj, he is contesting on a Rashtriya Janata Dal ticket.

Naghmani, a Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar, is contesting for the Chatra seat on RJD's ticket. He faces charges of having fired at Loknayak Jai Prakash Narayan.

Ex-MLA Prabhunath Singh, who is contesting from Mahrajganj on a Samata Party ticket, faces 48 criminal cases and was the main accused in the murder of Janata Dal MLA Ashok Singh in 1994. A small gun-making unit was discovered from his place during the last elections.

Ranjan Yadav alias Pappu Yadav is the president of the state unit of the Samajwadi Party. He won the last elections with a record margin of votes. The "don", who is facing 45 cases of murder, extortion and kidnapping, was recently booked under the National Security Act.

Pappu Yadav's longtime rival Anand Mohan Singh, who is contesting the Seohar seat on Shankar Singh Vaghela's Rashtriya Janata Party ticket, had come into the limelight with theopposition to the erstwhile chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav. He faces 17 criminal cases and was also booked under NSA. He is charged with the murder of district magistrate of Gopalganj G Krishanyah.
