AMBI plans book on capital market for investors

MUMBAI, February 10: The Association of Merchant Bankers in India (AMBI) is planning to release a book for investors which will cover the different aspects of the capital market. The book is likely to be released by the end of this month.

The release of the investor-guidance book is part of AMBI's on-going endeavour to create awareness among investors.

The booklet will give an exhaustive picture to investors about the capital market, the various institutions that exist in it and the intermediaries involved. The book will give full information on the types of instruments, which include debt and equity instruments. The book will also carry information regarding the responsibility of the various intermediaries like the issuers, lead manager and also the market regulatory body, that is SEBI.

Investors will also be educated on market jargon with the meaning of words like Sensex, market capitalisation and the like apart from being told how the Sensex is formulated. The booklet will also inform the investorabout the broking community and the responsibilities of brokers. It will also try to educate the investor on the various types of transactions between a broker and an investor, and on the different types of directions that can be given to a broker.

The association has also tried to include information on the depository and mutual funds in the booklet. It has also defined the three categories of shares on the stock exchanges. The booklet has defined the rights of the shareholders under the takeover code and it will also tries to educate the investor on how their grievances can be redressed.

As an industry and self-regulatory organisation, AMBI has been holding workshops all over the country on specific topics relating to the capital markets with a view to keeping marketmen informed on the goings-on.

Recently, AMBI held a seminar for the commerce students of RA Poddar college where there was an open interaction between the students and a panel of merchant bankers. AMBI is planning to hold similar seminarsas this would help the students to gain more knowledge on the investment banking industry, takeovers, mergers and acquisitions. The trend of educating investors is now really picking up with several industry associations doing things for the investors. The Association of Mutual Funds of India (AMFI) has also published a booklet for investors which contains information on mutual funds.
