Tata-IBM expects six-fold increase in turnover to $1 billion by 2000

NEW DELHI, February 13: Tata-IBM expects a six-fold increase in turnover to about $1 billion by the year 2000.

The company's present turnover is Rs 632 crore. Tata-IBM has maintained an annual growth rate of over 100 per cent during the past few years. The company expects much of the growth to be be fuelled by E-business. It expects to achieve a dominant position in this segment and generate nearly 90 per cent of its total revenues in the country in a couple of years.

IBM vice-president (software sales & marketing operations) Stephanie L Hahn said the response from domestic business had been tremendous, with many companies showing keen interest in adopting this technology. IBM wasdesigning an entire product portfolio for E-business and expects to be the market leader, she added. IBM director (emerging markets software Asia Pacific/Middle East) Mike Colleary said despite certain inherent limitations like the lack of infrastructure and deregulation, the company was committed to developing this business. Thecompany had made substantial investments in E-business projects in the recent past and was keen to drive the growth of Internet banking based on Java among other technologies, he said.

With more than 70 per cent of the world's data residing on IBM systems, the company has a critical understanding of the core business processes and is uniquely placed to build end to end E-business solutions that will transform companies in key industries. E-business refers not only to Internet based transactions but to all business activity, from sales to marketing, to operations and information management, that uses the Internet, Intranets and local networks. The company is holding seminars to inform customers about superior technologies like the Internet and Intranet to improve their marketing, customer service and sales efforts. One such event held in Delhi, evoked a good response.
