Overseas buyers flock to Delhi carpet fair

NEW DELHI, February 19: The four-day Carpet Expo India'98 has generated business worth Rs 300 crore, in addition to business worth Rs 10 crore under negotiation, according to an official release.

The expo was organised by the All India Carpet Trade Fair Committee under the aegis of the Development Commissioner for Handicrafts in the textiles ministry.

The release says more than 250 carpet buyers from the UK, the US, Germany, Canada, Belgium, Singapore, etc visited the fair which ended in the capital on February 14.

President of the Trade Fair Committee JA Ansari has said that the government has given due recognition to the carpet industry by promoting the expo, which was inaugurated by textiles secretary Prabhat Kumar.

The rural-based carpet industry earns foreign exchange to the tune of over Rs 2,000 crore annually, besides providing gainful employment to 20 lakh artisans all over the country.
