Carrier Aircon plans to double compressor output, hike capacity

NEW DfELHI, February 19: Carrier Aircon is planning to almost double the production of compressors over the next three years to two lakh units per annum.

The company will also increase capacity to produce room airconditioners over 30 per cent to 60,000 units and also increase the number of retail comfort showrooms.

At present, the Indian subsidiary of US-based Carrier Corporation has the capacity to manufacture 45,000 units of room airconditioners and 1.2 lakh units of compressors. The company proposes to finance all expansion through internal accruals.

Unveiling a new range of airconditioners here at a press conference to mark the tenth anniversary of the company, Carrier Aircon president and managing director Stephen S Young said the company was targetting a turnover of Rs 1,000 crore by year 2001 with a market share of 35 per cent.

He added that Carrier Aircon intended to launch products to suit consumers in various income groups to drive the entire market for airconditioning.

Young furtherstated that the company expected to close 1997-98 with turnover of Rs 400 crore. The company had reported sales income of Rs 185 crore in the first half ended September 1997 with net profit of Rs 12.72 crore.

The company intends to launch products to suit various income groups to drive growth in the airconditioning market. It would also re-design some of its existing products and take up product upgradation and miniaturisation of airconditioners. Service is expected to remain an area of focus. The new range of airconditioners launched here include Europa with rotary compressor and Europa Electronic for rooms and Carrier Cassette split system.

The Europa range is sleeker than the existing models of the company and more quieter. Europa Electronic is equipped with microprocessor controls and 24 hour programmeable timer. These room airconditioners are priced upwards of Rs 30,000. The Carrier Cassette, targetted at the light commercial segment where interior design is the key focus, will retail atapproximately Rs 1 lakh.
