South Korea's Kim names prime ministerSouth Korean president-elect Kim Dae-Jung has decided to name his ally Kim Jong-Pil as the new prime minister despite objections from the majority opposition, his aide said on Monday. Quoting the president-elect, the aide said on television: "as promised in the presidential election, Kim Jong-Pil was to become prime minister if I was elected." Kim was a man "needed to help me bring stability to the nation," the future president was quoted as saying.
Mitsubishi may quit UK computer market: Mitsubishi Electric Corp is considering quitting sales in Britain of desktop personal computers targeted at consumers, a spokesman said. The company plans instead to market to companies the 50,000 PCs annually produced by the Birmingham-based Apricot Computers Ltd, which Mitsubishi acquired in 1990.
Hyundai Motor stops some assembly lines: South Korea's largest carmaker Hyundai Motor Co Ltd said on Monday operation of part of its passenger car and pickup truckassembly lines at its main plant in Ulsan had been temporarily stopped in a move to readjust production. A company spokesman in Ulsan said production had been halted for two to four weeks for Avante, Grandeur and Dynasty passenger cars, Tiburon Sports sedan and Porter pickup truck. He said the move was necessary because demand for those models has been declining, mostly in line with the deepening slump of the domestic economy. Workers on those lines, totalling about 4,000 out of 31,000 employees at the plant, would take paid holidays for about two thirds of the period, he said.
Suzuki Motor to export new 250cc scooter to Europe: Suzuki Motor Corp said on Monday that the company plans to start exporting its new 250cc scooter Sky Wave in March to Europe, mainly Italy. Suzuki has yet to decide the export volume of Sky Wave, which is Suzuki's first ever 250cc scooter model, a company spokesman said. Japanese exports of 250cc scooters to Europe by Honda Motor Co Ltd and Yamaha Motor Co Ltd rose to acombined 16,000 units in calendar 1997 up from 8,000 in 1996, due to strong demand mainly in Italy, industry sources said. Suzuki, Japan's top minicar maker and the world's third biggest motorcycle maker, said on Monday it would introduce the Sky Wave model in Japan on February 27, with an annual sales target of 8,000 units.
