Calcutta, Delhi ED wings play tug-of-war

Kohinoor Mandal
Calcutta, February 25: The enforcement directorate here has refused to resume charge of the case involving Ashok Jain, Arun Bajoria and Keshav Bangur, which it had opened following suspicions of violation of the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act to the tune of Rs 37 crore. Sources said the case was transferred to the ED office in New Delhi to facilitate investigations into certain aspects of the case. Recently, the Delhi office wanted its Calcutta counterpart to take back the case.

It is learnt that officials here are cut up because a number of their suggestions were ignored by Delhi officials of the ED. The case has become complicated as a result, and the Calcutta office doesn't want to handle it anymore. "For example, Calcutta ED wanted to arrest Arun Bajoria last year during March/ April, just after the interrogation of Keshav Bangur on March 5, when he disclosed the involvement of Bajoria. His house was raided but the city- based ED officials was not allowed to arrest him," industry sources said.
