Synopsys mulls expansion of Bangalore operations

Our Bureau
Bangalore, Mar 9: Synopsys (India) Pvt Ltd, a fully-owned subsidiary of the US-based Synopsis Inc, has drawn up plans to expand its operations in the country. It has set up a sales and support operation in Bangalore as part of its expansion plans.

The company, which is a leading supplier of Electronic Design Automation (EDA), recently brought under its fold Viewlogic Systems Inc.

The $500- million merger was considered to be one of the largest mergers in the IT industry.

Synopsis Inc chief operating officer Chi-Foon Chan said, "The merger with Viewlogic establishes Synopsys as the clear leader in all vital technologies for high-level designs and systems-on-a-chip to help us drive dramatic productivity growth for designers and market growth for leading edge electronic products."

The company has also set up a new 25,000 sq ft facility in Koramangala, Bangalore to house the R&D centres of Synopsis and Viewlogic.

The combined centre will specialise in development of EDA software and provide designmethodologies and consulting services, Chan said.

"The Indian design market has been experiencing rapid growth and Synopsis tools are currently used in almost all phases of design," Synopsis (India) Pvt Ltd managing director Sanjay Nayak said. The US firm has already invested around $4 million for R&D operations in India.

"We expect major growth in the areas of digital communications and telecom network. Apart from the existing channel partners we will also undertake consultancy and support services for our clients," Nayak said.

A major area that the company plans to tap is the vast research potential available in leading Indian universities. "As part of our university relations programme, we will be providing them with our latest EDA software and also fund professors for doing research on certain key technologies," Synopsis senior vice president Dave Burow said.
