Seagram to invest Rs 10 cr in R&D centre

Global beverage company, Seagram Manufacturing plans to invest Rs 10 crore in its research and development (R&D) centre. This is in addition to its earlier investment of Rs 35 crore. The centre, situated near Pune, is the seventh such centre across the globe, a company release said. Since Seagram is one of the few companies in the country to use only-grain spirits in the production of its blended whiskies, there is a need to develop a process for grain fermentation under local conditions.

TTK group firm emerges largest condom maker

TTK-LIG Ltd, a Rs 57-crore company of the house of TTKs, has emerged the country's largest condom manufacturer with the commissioning of its indigenously-designed condom factory at Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu. The Rs 20-crore facility has the capacity to produce 125 million pieces a year. This has hiked the company's aggregate capacity to 1 billion, TTK group managing director TT Jagannathan said.

Trade fair at Munich

Electronica '98, the international trade fair for components and assemblies in electronics production, will be held at the New Munich Trade Fair Centre from November 10 to 13. The trade centre will also host another fair -- Systems '98 from October 19 to 23. Announcing this here Messe Muenchen GmbH head international division J Vogel said Electronica '98 will house products and services on semiconductors, sensors and microsystems, electromechanical components and bonding techniques. Systems '98 will feature the latest technologies in telecommunication, networking, online, computer and computer peripherals, he added.

Royal Jordanian Airline unveils new class

As part of its plan to upgrade service standards, the Royal Jordanian Airline has introduced a new class called `Crown Class' which offers first class service at business class rates. The new product is superior in terms of service and type of seats, a company release said. The decision to launch the product follows the successful launch of offering the super-business class to north America, the Far East and the Indian sub-continent. The airline saw a 20 per cent increase in the number of passengers using the new services, it said.

All Nippon, Lufthansa to join frequent-flyer programme

Japanese airline, All Nippon Airways (ANA), and Lufthansa have agreed to tie up the frequent flyer programme from May 1, 1998. As a result, the members of ANA Mileage Club and Miles & More programme, will be able to boost their mileage accounts on flights of the respective partner. With this proposed tie up, Lufthansa will become the ninth partner and the fourth European airline to sign up in the ANA Mileage Club, according to an ANA release. Members of the ANA club can now avail of Lufthansa's services to 91 countries and 294 destinations, it added. In addition, both airlines have agreed for strategic alliance including code-share services. The pact will be signed on April 21.

Chip to be launched by month-end

Chip, one of the world's leading computer magazine, is being shortly launched in India. The magazine, published by the Vogel Media group of Germany, will be brought out by Exicom India. Although Chip is published out of 12 countries, the India edition will be the magazine's first English edition. The 180-page monthly magazine, to be priced at Rs 80 per issue, will be available from the end of the month. It will be targeted at individual-computer users with information on the latest happenings in the industry, reviews of latest products and tips on computer usage. Besides, the magazine will also have a free Cd-Rom containing software titles, games, pictures and anti virus, with each issue.

IA rescheduling flights from Kochi

Indian Airlines (IA) has withdrawn its flight IC-507/IC-508 operating between Kozhikode and Kochi on Wednesdays and Fridays. The frequency of flights between Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram has been increased to four a week. This will be in addition to the flights operating on Mondays and Thursdays. There will now be flights to Thiruvananthapuram from Kochi on Wednesdays and Fridays too.

Iisco unit wins laurel

The steel foundry and light-casting divisions of the Indian Iron & Steel Company's (Iisco) Kulti works has been given the ISO 9002 certification. The Kulti works is now a part of the Steel Authority of India Ltd's growth division, of which Iisco is a subsidiary. The certification was awarded by Det Norske Veritas under the RVA accreditation scheme of the Netherlands.
