Patna, Mar 12: Ranchi-based consultancy firm Mecon has bagged an assignment for setting up an external coal handling system on turnkey basis for the Tamil Nadu State Electricity Board's north Chennai thermal power project. The work will be completed within 36 months, a company release said. The union government has received a loan from the ordinary capital resources of the Asian Development Bank. The loan is given to TNEB to finance the project. In the initial phase, the system will meet demands of three 210mw units. It will be upgraded to meet the demands of two 500mw units at a later stage. It will also satisfy the requirements of the Ennore Mettur thermal power stations through its stacking, reclaiming and wagon loading facilities.
The coal will be received at the Ennore satellite port by conventional bulk carriers of up to 65,000 dwt and transported to various consumption points by 11-km-long conveyor series with capacity not exceeding 4,000 t/hr.
The ship unloading capacity can be increased to 8,000 t/hr by operating both the conveyor series simultaneously. The system also includes high capacity crushers, screen, stackers, reclaimers and wagon loaders.
Incorporating state-of-the-art coal operation resource engineering system (Cores), the computerised system of the plant will provide enhanced man-machine interface (MMI) between the operators and the coal handling system, including automatic route selection. According Mecon sources, the project is a major breakthrough in the infrastructure industry.
