Tax-free budget for AP

Our Bureau
Hyderabad, Mar 20: Laying the blame for the precarious ways and means position of the state at the centre's doorstep, Andhra Pradesh finance minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju on Friday presented a totally tax free budget for 1998-99 leaving a huge revenue gap of Rs 589.19 crores.

That budget would be devoid of any new imposts was to be expected in view of the state assembly elections slated for next year, a confirmation to the effect that political factors did come into play in the budget making exercise when the finance minister himself revealed the verdict from the just concluded Lok Sabha polls provided invaluable inputs.
