HYDERABAD, April 4: The Indian economy needed to grow at a sustained rate of seven per cent per annum in order to absorb the growing addition to the labour market, according to Andhra Pradesh governor C Rangarajan. Delivering the valedictory address at the 28th Long Defence Management Course (LDMC) at the College of Defence Management at Secunderabad here today, Rangarajan said that "there are many countries around us which are growing fast and we must be part of that race as well." He, however, said the country had accomplished much since Independence.
The defence services could not afford to be second best and hence constant improvement through reappraisals, innovations and technological upgradation had become a must, he added.
"How well the defence services perform in the present environment with so many challenges depends upon how well they are trained," he added.
Rangarjan presented the degree of Master Management Studies award to 72 officers from Indian navy, ministry of defence (MoD) anddefence officers from friendly neighbouring countries such as Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
The LDMC is a residential course of 42 weeks being offered by the College of Defence Management.
