Calcutta tea auction sees good demand for new-season varieties

Calcutta, April 9: The Calcutta tea sale No 14 and Guwahati tea sale No 15 held this week met with good demand as new season teas, though nominal in quantity, realised better prices.

In the CTC section of the Calcutta tea sale, a very nominal quantity of teas were offered. The new season teas realised higher prices than last year's opening levels. The good Assam brokens were being sold between Rs 110 and Rs 118 per kg and fannings between Rs 105 and Rs 110 per kg while those of medium brokens between Rs 103 and Rs 107 per kg.

The better sorts, realised attractive prices -- Rs 120 to Rs 127 per kg and Dooars origin fannings and brokens saw strong note, being sold between Rs 105 and Rs 113 a kg.

However, the old season varieties were occasionally lower following the quality. The south India varieties were absorbed between Rs 77 and Rs 82 registering a decline by Rs 3 to Rs 4 a kg.

The western India option for new season teas with other internal buyers lending fair support. The Brooke Bond showed limitedinterest with other packeteers limiting their offtake. There were nominal export inquiries for bolder brokens.

There were 300 chests of Darjeeling for sale which met with good demand. The new season varieties attracted good prices and were lifted by the West Bengal buyers. The remainder, particularly the old season sorts, sold at around last week's levels.

The orthodox sale in the local auction met with better demand and all the 9646 packages on offer were sold. A nominal weight of new season tea which was offered from the Terai region attracted good offering from the traditional exporters and West Bengal dealers as well.

A small quantity of new season medium grade tea from Assam also sold at higher rates than those of last year's opening levels. The old season, however, sold readily in line with quality and were largely accounted for by the West Bengal dealers.

The Calcutta dust sale registered bullish note for the next season teas with selling generally between Rs 110 and Rs 115 a kg. Some bettergrades, however, were ruling higher between Rs 120 and Rs 130 a kg. Dooars dusts were absorbed between Rs 95 and Rs 104 a kg. The old season teas were irregularly lower depending on quality.

The Brooke Bond offered very selective support for old season teas while western Indian opted for new season good teas. The West Bengal dealers operated for both new season and old season teas.

At the Guwahati CTC sale, market opened to a good demand with levels of prices registering a decline by Rs 5 to Rs 8 a kg comparing to those of last week's. The good Assam brokens were absorbed between Rs 104 and Rs 108 a kg while a small quantity of medium grades Assams ranged between Rs 94 and Rs 98 a kg.

The fannings, however, sold better between Rs 90 and Rs 94 a kg. A nominal quantity of medium Cachar tea also realised attractive prices being sold between Rs 90 and Rs 94 a kg. The general levels were lower than those of the levels of sale No 14 held two weeks ago.

There was limited export enquiry for the CTC offeredin Guwahati sale. The western India extended worthwhile support and other domestic buyers along with Brooke Bond remained in operation. The other packeteers saw less active.
