  World Bank urges Centre to trim fertiliser subsidies
World Bank has asked the BJP-led coalition government to reduce the subsidies on fertilisers and food to rein in the country's fiscal deficit.
  Bankers' body wants priority loans limit cut
An Indian Banks' Association (IBA)-constituted panel has suggested to the Narasimham committee on banking-sector reforms that the priority-sector lending limit of 40% of the net-bank credit must be cut to 10%. It has also suggested redefining the sector.

S-E Asian crisis may hit sluggish economy, fears chamber
The Indian electronics, cement, automobiles, textiles and garments, tourism, rice, gypsum board and solvent extraction industries have been affected by the economic crisis in the south-east Asian countries, according to a PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry note.
Priority-sector lending yoke weighs bankers' concern
The banking sector has locked up a major chunk of funds in priority-sector lending carrying low yields. Most bankers privately admit the priority sector is the industry's largest chunk of non-performing assets (NPAs).

EU draws up blueprint for energy sector
The European Commission plans to launch a programme for the energy sector in India focusing on projects relating to co-generation, clean coal technology and rural electrification. These projects will be carried out jointly with a local partner. The EC will soon submit a detailed proposal of this programme to the Indian government.

Economy will look up by end of year, says Subramaniam
The country's economy will see an upswing by the year-end when sundry policies will attain criticality, said former cabinet secretary TSR Subramaniam. He stressed the need for vertical integration, chiefly the re-alingnment of cotton-farming, spinning, weaving, processing and clothing sectors, to beef up the textile industry.
