Turmeric loses initial gains

April 12: Turmeric shed its earlier gains in spot delivery at Sangli during the week in speculative trading. During the week the prices moved up from Rs 2,900 per quintal and touched a high of Rs 3,000. But the rally was shortlived and trading sentiment in forwards was affected.

Spot-delivery could not sustain its peak and fell to Rs 2,925 on the last day of trading. The prices fluctuated between Rs 2,950, the first day of trading, and Rs 2,825 per quintal. In the truck-load section, trading of 87 truck-loads - 13,580 bags of turmeric in the price level of Rs 2,600 to Rs 3,500 per quintal. The varieties traded were Nizamabad and Sadashiv Peth. The arrivals of 75 truckloads were reported during the week. The prices exhibited better trends during the week.

In Ready section i.e. in open auction sales of 6,416 bags out of the arrivals of 6,416 bags were noticed here in the local Agricultural Produce Market yard. The prices ranged from Rs 2,600 to Rs 4,530 per quintal. The best Marka quality finger remainedunchanged as the demand for the Marka quality Rajapuri and Salem was encouraging during the week.

The demand for medium quality finger also was steady during the week the price-level, therefore, was steady from Rs 3,200 to Rs 3,300 per quintal and the below average quality - powder quality variety ruled from Rs 2,780 to Rs 2,700 on the steady demand from local consuming centers, it was stated.
