Janata Dal plans revamp, to focus on Uttar Pradesh
Our Bureau
New Delhi, April 19: The Janata Dal on the verge of a collapse decided to revamp the party and gain popularity by launching an agitation across the country against the Vajpayee government. The JD national executive was also critical of forging opportunistic alliances at the cost of the party. It decided to regain its hold back in the most populous state of UP, where it had lost ground to Samajwadi Party of Mulayam Singh Yadav. The party leaders defended its decision to go it alone in the last elections in UP. The party could not move on crutches, it felt. It also decided to strengthen itself in UP, even if than meant division of United Front votes. Multiplicity of parties was a necessity in the present socio-cultural set up and the era of coalition would stay. The party executive severely criticised opportunistic leaders. They were told that they would not be able to find a berth in a future UF government if the party itself was wiped off. The motto must be to go it alone and join a government on its ownstrength. Its biggest strength was its ideological base, which the leaders noted had not eroded. Copyright © 1998 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
