San Miguel uncorks spirit

MUMBAI, April 27: San Miguel Corporation of Philippines launched its flagship brand of beer, San Miguel, in the city on Monday. The premium brand will be rolled out in other cities shortly, San Miguel Corporation president and chief operating officer Francisco C Eizmendi Jr said.

San Miguel beer is available in both cans and bottles priced in the range of Rs 45-48. Competing beer brand Kingfisher is priced in the range of Rs 35-40. Activity has been brewing in the city's beer market with the recent launch of Foster's and the German beer HaakeBeck.

The country's beer-market size is 450 million litres. It is projected to double by 2001.Beverages account for 60 per cent of consolidated sales revenue of the $2.3-billion company. San Miguel Corporation is also into the businesses of foods and packaging products. However, beer forms the core business accounting for 46 per cent of the company's sales. According to Eizmendi, the company's immediate plan is to concentrate on building the San Miguel beer brand inthe country. He said there was no immediate plan to bring in its food brands. In India, it has completed its licensing agreement with Associated Breweries & Distilleries Pvt Ltd, the manufacturers of the leading London Pilsner beer, to manufacture and distribute San Miguel.
