May 3: The Union Government has set up a committee under the Indian Council of Agriculture Research to assess the research needs of spices as part of its efforts to boost exports.Sources in the Spices Board told the The Financial Express that the quintennial review team, having various projects all over the country for future agriculture research, would suggest measures to be followed up to 2005.
The team, which met last week the Spices Board chairman, the marketing and development heads of the Board and the representatives of the spice trade, is headed by a retired ICAR scientist and former director of CPCRI, Dr Ahmmed Babappa. The Indian Institute of Spices Research principal scientist, Dr Sadanandan is the member secretary of the panel and project coordinator.The panel would recommend to ICAR the future programmes for development of spices in their production aspect.
