Mumbai, May 4: Equities rallied smartly scoring impressive gains following fresh optimism in the market as operators and foreign funds made fresh commitments with renewed vigour. In brisk activity, 129 securities hit their price bands of 714 scrips which showed good advances. However, 354 shares showed losses and 70 remained unchanged.The NSE-50 opened fractionally up at 1159.80 and gradually advanced further to close at 1185.15 as against last weekend's close of 1159.35, netting a gain of 25.80 points. The Dollar NSE-50, too, spurted to close at 1033.50 from its previous close of 1011.30, showing a rise of 22.20 points. The mid-cap index zoomed by 81.10 points to 1670.00 from last Thursday's close of 1588.90.
The total volume of business was up by Rs 153.85 crore at Rs 1517.88 crore from a total traded shares of 554.17 lakhs with 1,96,151 trades. The debentures traded value was Rs 17.07 lakhs.
ITC led the market with the highest turnover of Rs 411.25 crore followed by Satyam Computer (Rs 125.23crore), Reliance Industries (Rs 105.68 crore), ACC (Rs 97.58 crore) and Tata Tea (Rs 63.72 crore).
Other top securities were HLL (Rs 63.37 crore), SBI (Rs 54.14 crore), TISCO (Rs 38.48 crore), Infosys (Rs 33.03 crore), BPL (Rs 26.93 crore), L&T (Rs 24.77 crore), Glaxo (Rs 23.58 crore), Castrol (Rs 22.75 crore), ICICI (Rs 19.24 crore), TELCO (Rs 19.00 crore), LML (Rs 18.20 crore), VSNL (Rs 16.20 crore), Zee TV (Rs 15.95 crore), Sterlite (Rs 15.49 crore), Digital Equipment (Rs 13.42 crore), MTNL (Rs 12.91 crore), BHEL (Rs 12.16 crore), Cadbury (Rs 11.18 crore), Dr Reddy's (Rs 10.51 crore) and BSES (Rs 10.16 crore).
The top five nifty gainers were Glaxo at Rs 422.55 (Rs 384.10), Indo-Gulf at Rs 41.75 (Rs 37.95), HLL Rs 1661.20 (Rs 1581.35), L&T Rs 262.85 (Rs 251.30) and TVS Suzuki Rs 592.70 (Rs 566.90).
The top five Nifty losers were Tata Tea Rs 400.15 (Rs 410.35), BPCL Rs 393.25 (Rs 400.00), Thermax Rs 236.60 (Rs 239.10), Grasim Rs 341.65 (Rs 343.30) and East India Hotel Rs 372.85 (Rs 374.60).
