The government makes substantial investments and efforts to provide a range of utilities and services to its citizens. It has a huge machinery and a number of departments to cater to the basic needs of the people, who naturally expect that everything from telecommunications to power to function efficiently. But the actual situation is far from comfortable.

The Internet is cluttered with designer sites that are visually pleasing at first sight but prove notoriously difficult to navigate. Virus hoax looms large over E-mail users
Katherine Ludke was petrified. The Maryland-based engineer opened her E-mail one day and found a warning: don't even look at any electronic mail messages with the subject good times, or your computer's hard drive will be erased. Another message cautioned, opening any E-mail message called death ray will infect your computer with a deadly virus pass on this information to everyone you know.
New interactive web site to help firms tap the globe
Business enterprises in the country will soon be in a position to engage in electronic commerce with 54 countries via a free subscription. This has been made possible with the help of the new interactive web site set up by the Commonwealth Secretariat's Export and Industrial Development Division (EIDD). The web site is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.

Webel Nicco, Grundig join hands for colour television output
Grundig Electronics India Ltd has entered into a collaboration with Webel Nicco Electronics Ltd to manufacture and market colour television sets in the eastern region. Grundig is a subsidiary of the DM3-billion Grundig Electronics GmbH of Germany, while Webel Nicco Electronics Ltd is the 50:50 joint venture between the West Bengal government and Nicco Corporation Ltd.

Clinton to visit General Motors unit in China
US President Bill Clinton is expected to visit the upcoming manufacturing site of American General Motors (GM) in Shanghai during his maiden state visit to the country next month. GM, the world's largest manufacturer of automobiles has signed up a 50:50 joint venture with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC) to make two models of `Buick' mid-size luxury sedans in China.
