Modules on offer from University of Strathclyde

After the April module, the University of Strathclyde Graduate Business School is offering another executive programme in October. It is now possible to register for the programme based on the skills needed in your particular area of work.

These modules will be held along with the full-time MBA programme in Mumbai and Delhi. The assessment and eligibility criteria are the same as those of the full-time MBA programme. On successful completion, candidates will be awarded a certificate of performance by the University of Strathclyde. These modules can also be availed by executives who are not enrolled for an MBA with the university as well.

The modules offered are General and Strategic Management, International Business Environment, Information and Decision Making, Management Functions. A candidate can collect credit points from these modules to graduate into the full fledged international MBA course in the future.

For the normal MBA course, applicants should normally possess a recognised first degree witha minimum of three years of relevant working experience and over 23 years of age. Those without academic qualifications but having substantial senior managerial experience will be considered on a case to case basis. Professional qualifications will also be considered.

A TOEFL or IELTS score may be required for applicants whose first language is not English. Verbal and reasoning skills may be assessed through tests such as the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). For the executive development modules, however, no TOEFL/IELTS or GMAT scores are required.

The MBA in India was launched in October 1996. Thereafter, centres were set up in Delhi, Mumbai, Calcutta, Chennai and Bangalore. There is a second intake in April each year. The British Council acts as Strathclyde's local partner for the MBA programme run in Turkey, Bahrain, Dubai and Thailand. It is proposed to conduct the MBA under a similar agreement with the British Council of India.

Today there are 60 students in Mumbai and Delhi employed inmultinational companies like British Airways, Trikaya Grey and Citicorp Financial Services. The alumni consists of candidates with designations of Vice- President (Marketing), ITC Welcomegroup, Manager (Accounts) GE Capital and Head American Express, India. A candidate is required to fill out an exhaustive application form with two references - professional and academic - to the British Council. Applications will be forwarded to Strathclyde with comments by the programme manager. The decision to offer admission is taken by the Admissions Board at Strathclyde.

An executive can obtain the same Strathclyde MBA degree whether they study on the full time, part time, open learning or international programme route. The university does not differentiate between the various routes as the entry qualifications, course content and assessment are exactly the same, regardless of the route selected.

The duration of the International MBA course is a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years. The core of theprogramme is the General and Strategic Management module which covers the roles and styles of management and the development and implementation of business policy. It also develops an individual's personal and managerial skills to assist them to become competent managers. The central core is supported by the:

  • module on information for decision making

  • module exploring the internal environment (management functions)
  • module exploring the external environment (international business environment)
    The aim is to show the inter-relationship between all these modulesThe total fees payable 7,700 pounds (approximately Rs 5 lakh) which can be paid in four installments. For the independent executive development modules, the cost involved would vary depending on which module is chosen.

    Self study materials including special lecture notes, audio material, video material and computer disks are provided by the university. Besides, there are contact sessions conducted by senior corporate leaders andacademic seminars and personal development workshops by the faculty from the United Kingdom.
