Manohar Joshi may sack defiant Ganesh Naik

Our Political Bureau
MUMBAI, May 8: Maharashtra chief minister Manohar Joshi tonight gave the broadest hint yet that Ganesh Naik, forest minister in the Shiv Sena-BJP government, was being dropped from his three-year old ministry. Joshi refused to divulge the names of ministers being dropped from his cabinet. "I have sent the necessary letter to the governor and am awaiting his reply," he said.

Without stating in as much words, the chief minister told a group of newsmen who met him in Mantralaya for the second time in a span of over an hour that disciplinary action would be initiated against Naik `As per constitution'. Asked whether he meant the party constitution, Joshi said `No constitution is above the law and the issue will be dealt accordingly'.Naik, a senior Sena leader and party chieftain from the Navi Mumbai area, had repeatedly spurned suggestions from Joshi that he tender his resignation. Asked when had he sought Naik's resignation, the chief minister told newsmen that "two-three days ago I personally conveyed tohim that he should tender his resignation."

When a reporter suggested that there is no harm in his disclosing the names as there was no chance that the governor would not accept his recommendations, Joshi said: "If I disclose the names now, it would be a breach of protocol."
